Have a holiday planned soon? Let's talk through some tips for staying active while travelling and on holidays.

As we start to approach the warmer months and head toward the end of the year, the travel season is in full swing. Staying active while away from home doesn't have to be complicated, there are many ways to keep moving and feel great during your travels.

If you are going away anytime soon, you may want to start thinking of ways you can stay active while still enjoying your holiday. Because you can do both!

Here are some tips for keeping active while travelling and on holidays:

  • Walk Whenever Possible: Walking is a great way to sightsee and get your steps up at the same time. Explore your holiday destination on foot if possible, walking can help you get in some fresh air and has so many positive benefits to your health. Consider opting for accommodation that is centrally located so you can easily walk to and from attractions, restaurants, shops, and wherever else you might like to explore.

  • Pick Accommodation that Has a Gym or One Close: Hotel gyms might not have a huge variety of equipment, but many will have some of the basics to be able to complete a decent workout. If your accommodation doesn't have a gym, check out if there are local gyms close by.

  • Pack Some Gym Clothes and Appropriate Shoes: Make sure you are prepared with at least one gym outfit and appropriate shoes to work out in, otherwise, it is too easy to use the excuse of "I can't work out because I forgot to pack my workout clothes".

  • Pack Easy-To-Carry Equipment: If you have some extra room in your luggage, try bringing a resistance band, a jump rope or some booty bands. You can use these in the hotel gym, an outdoor area, or even in your hotel room if there is space.

  • Get Involved in Local Activities: Look into activities that are unique to your holiday destination. Guided tours can be a great way to incorporate physical activity with sightseeing. Keep an eye out for walking tours, or tours that feature activities like kayaking, hiking, etc.

  • Set a Fitness Schedule: Dedicate specific times during your holiday to exercise. Even a short 20-30 minute workout counts!

  • Have Your Coach Write a Holiday Program: If you are working with a coach, have them write you up a simple exercise program that features minimal equipment that you can do while on holidays. Alternatively, utilise fitness apps that can give you quick workouts that can be done anywhere.

  • Use Downtime to Stretch and Move: Use waiting periods or layovers to get some movement in. Light stretching or a few bodyweight movements can help you feel more energised. We tend to feel stiff when sitting down for long periods, so even a few minutes of movement can help relieve body stiffness.

If you have upcoming travels, consider the ways you can incorporate exercise into your holiday. Don't be afraid to get a little creative and embrace the culture of where you are if travelling abroad. You can still stay active and on track with your health and fitness while travelling.
